Wayne delighted with captaincy
Wayne Rooney has spoken of his pride at captaining England on home soil for the first time as the Three Lions prepare to take on San Marino at a sold-out Wembley.
The Manchester United striker has captained his country once before, in the 1-0 defeat to Brazil in Doha in 2009, and has been handed the armband with Steven Gerrard suspended and Frank Lampard injured.
And Rooney is delighted to have been asked to lead his side out in their World Cup qualifier.
He said: "It's a great honour and something I am really proud of.
"It's a big challenge for myself and I'm looking forward to it, I'm excited and I am hoping we can cap the day off with a good victory."
With San Marino ranked 206th in the world, England are overwhelming favourites to pick up three points on Friday night, and Rooney has urged his team-mates to remain focused.
He said: "We have to make sure we play the football we have been trying to do. We have been working hard all week. The Manager has told us what he expects of us and we have to try and do that as best we can."
Rooney also paid tribute to the 90,000 fans who will head to Wembley on Friday night.
He added: "It's great that the game is sold out, and I think that the fans since I have been involved with England have been fantastic.
"They travel all around the world for us, and to have 90,000 there for us is fantastic. We don't want to let the fans down.
