Sports and games
Importance of sport and games
Sport and games are very important for active relaxation and are also important for our physical and mental health.
People do the sports because they want to keep fit, build their muscles and make their body look better. Most people do the sports as a hobby but some people do the sport as a job.
The main difference between sport and game is that game is the collective and the sport is more individual - it means football or basketball are games and e.g. tennis or swimming are sports.
We can practice some of sports and games indoor and some of them outdoor. In the first group there are e.g. ice-hockey, basketball, badminton, figure skating or gymnastics and in the second group there are e.g. baseball, golf, winter sports such as skiing (slalom, down-hill, ski-jump), ralleies or riding. There are also sports for both indoor and outdoor - swimming, athletics (sprint, jump, javelin), football, tennis, volleyball etc. Some sports such as diving, windsurfing or racing can be quite dangerous and very expensive.
Sports at Czech and British schools, P.T. lessons
Students at Czech schools at P.T. lessons play e.g. volleyball, basketball, football. They also do gym or athletics sometimes they develop up muscles.
At British schools kids play football, volleyball, cricket. They can go swimming in their swimming pool or play tennis. At Američan schools students play basketball, rugby, baseball, football. They do gym, go swimming or play tennis.
Typical sports and games in the Czech Republic and Britain(U.S.A)
In the Czech republic we have the most popular football and ice-hockey and they are also our national sports. In football we were successfull in the past, our recent footbal performance is not so good. But we have the best ice-hockey team in the whole wide world... In last five years we won three championships and one Olympic games.
Many sports have their origin in Great Britain (England). The most specific is cricket, often called the English national sport. It has never been adopted in foreign countries (except the Commonwealth states). Also football, golf and tennis are very popular there. Rugby (rugby football) is very popular in Scotland and has its origin there, quite popular are rowing and horse-riding too. The major sports events of the year in UK are The Grand Slam Tennis Tournament in Wimbledon (in London), The British Open Golf Championship and The Grand National (horse-riding steeple-chase ). In Great Britain the old clubs of aristocracy and very rich people have a big prestige and very long tradition.
In the USA there are especially baseball and basketball (NBA), which have its origin there, ice-hockey (NHL) and golf very popular. There is a long tradition of school sport clubs at all of the high schools and colleges. Many Americans exercise for good health every day - fitness and keeping fit is an important part of American way of life.
Sport activities suitable for ordinary people
For many people sports means some activity either to keep fit their body or only for relax with friends or with family. For example golf – Everybody can play golf. Its very good for relaxing. When you play it, you can take a pleasure in landscape, you can walk and breath a fresh air. Then water sports are very good for your health, especially for your back.
I think every sport is suitable for everybody. If you feel up to any sport so you can do it.
What do you do to keep fit?
I love sport very much. I have played badminton professionaly for seven years. But now I play it only to keep fit, relax and for fun. I play squash too. When I am stressed I go to a sport centre to play squash and vent one's anger on. It’s very good for my mental condition.
I also eat healthy meals and drink a lot of water too.
For me is sport inseparable part of life.
Some facts from the history of the Olympic Games
Among the most famous sport events in the world ranks are Olympic games, of course. People represent their country in more than 30 sport events every four years. Summer and winter parts change once every two years. The first Olympic Games took place in Olympia, Greece in the year 776 B.C., there exist many legends – the story of the Marathon (in 490 b.c. a Greek runner ran about 42 km from Marathon to Athens; he was carrying the news of the Battle of Athens; but he ran too far, too fast; he died from exhaustion).
Symbol of the Games is The Olympic Flag – there are five connected circles, each symbolises one continent (blue – Europe, black – Africa, red – America, yellow – Asia, green – Australia); and The Olympic Fire – it is traditionally lighten in Greek Olympia and moved to the city in which the Games are taking place, it burns during the Olympic games.
Our country is well known all over the world (the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Jan Železný – throwing the javelin, Jana Novotná, Petr Korda, Ivan Lendl, …)
