London is the capital city of
the United Kingdom.
It is the ninth largest city in the world. London
is situated on the river Thames – in south-east England. The great fire in 1666
destroyed almost all the city.
There are many quarters in London. For example The city, the West End
and the East End. The city is the oldest part,
it is a historical centre of London.
The West End is the centre for shopping. We
can find many cinemas and theatres in this part. In The East End there are
situated London
docks and port. This is a part of factories.
The most popular red double-deckers go almost everywhere.
For fast transport, we can go by the Underground. This Underground is the
oldest in the world. There are many airports, too, for example Heathrow and
Gatwick.
The Houses of Parliament were built in gothic style, but are
only hundred years old. There is also a famous clock tower with Big Ben. The Bell was named after sir
Benjamin Hall, who was one of ministers. He was nicknamed “Big Ben”, because he
was very tall.
Whitehall
is the street, where the government offices are. Every Prime Minister live on Downing street number 10 since 1731.
Westminster Cathedral is one of the biggest roman catholic
churches in England.
It is the place, where Britain´s Kings and Queen were crowned.
St. Paul Cathedral is the 2nd
largest cathedral in the world. It is the work of the famous architect Sir
Christopher Wren and it was built it in the 17th century. During the
World War the 2nd it was damaged by bombs.
Tower Bridge is one of the most famous symbols of London. It can open in
the middle. It was built only in 19th century.
Trafalgar square was named after Admiral Nelson´s victory
over Napoleon. Nelsnon´s statue is situated on a high column. At Christmas time
a big Christmas tree stands here.
The British
Museum is the largest
Museum in the world. We can find here many very famous arts from Greece, Rome
and the Orient, Egyptian mummies etc. The British Museum´s Library is the
biggest library in the world.
The next very popular building in London
is Buckingham Palace. Today it is home of Queen
Elizabeth 2nd.
There are many parks in London. The largest park is Hyde
park, which is a large green area.
Tha tallest building in Britain is The Post Office Tower,
which is about 190m high.
Greenwich is the seat of the National Maritime Museum,
where the Royal Observatory is – here is a bras strip which marks the prime
meridian.
I think, that London
is very interesting city for tourism, because it is very popular, beautiful and
it has many and many famous building and attraction. Some of this attraction
are London Eye or Madame Tussaud´s, which is the world famous museum of
waxwork. It is international display Kings, Queen, politics, singers, stars of
films and television.
Many people, who want to earn some money, go here to find a
job, for example as au-pair.
